To earn, no need of big capital and
education: Chameli Sarki
Ms Chameli
Sarki, is a member of Citizen Awareness Centre (CAC) among 23 members in
Kamalamai Municipality Ward no. 15 of Sindhuli District, her easier lives because
of effective utilization of LIP grant in poultry and pig rearing.

Ms Sarki of
32 years in Kulokhola village was living with husband and children with
enormous struggle. As her husband Mr Bhakta Bahadur Sarki was separated from his
parents after one and half years of marriage. The family was regularly quarrelling
due to food scarcity and poverty. Two
mothers-in-law was serious problem for quarrel. “We received 2 Kg rice, ruined
clothes for covering and few simple cooking pots with 1 kattha land and 1.5 years daughter while separation with parents”,
said simple literate Ms Sarki. The life was so tragedy they had to pass night
using straw mat in cold season, when any guest arrived in house. Only husband
was working in daily wages and Ms Sarki was working in occasional labor in
village. Their life was wondering due to lack of awareness and access to
various assets in community.
When Kulokhola CAC of poor and excluded households (HHs) was formed in
the ward in 2068 BS, knowledge and importance of sanitation, vital
registration, rights and responsibilities, participation and representation in
citizen organization was known due to weekly ReFLECT classes. Ms Sarki was
nominated as chairperson of the CAC.

Though, I
was not able to introduce myself, now I can speak well in mass, can teach
others on women right and women based violence with sanitation, women health,
vital registration, social evils and government services. She express very glad
to represent from Dalit community in any public functions. With the support of LIP
grant of Rs 100 thousands, was received for income generation for poor and
disadvantaged HHs. She has received Rs 20 thousands for better daily lives to establish
local level poultry farming in minimum interest since Jesth, 2072 BS. She has started with 150 chicks reached
to above 200 and has harvested and marketed 3 lots. “It has fetched around Rs. 45 thousands and encouraged me
and my husband”, said by Ms Sarki. This has supported to have food easily
morning and evening. She paid all installments of first loan from the poultry
income. She has again received Rs. 25 thousands credit to start pig rearing to
earn more money. She has started with two piglets constructing improved pig
shed. One pig of Rs. 15 thousands cost value is ready to sell. She planned to
do poultry and piggery in a commercial way. Now, Ms Sarki has felt happy to
educate 3 children in addition to expenses in food, clothing and other family
expenses. “To earn money, no need of huge capital”, said Ms chameli Sarki. She
is happier to engage her husband in poultry and piggery business.
